The Blue Dot is UNESCO MGIEP’s bi-annual publication that explores the interconnected themes of education, peace, sustainable development, and global citizenship. The July 2018 edition, focusing on digital pedagogies, required a design approach that was both thematic and practical for the reader.
For the July 2018 issue, we designed a magazine layout system that could be applied to future editions. This edition included six sections, each uniquely colour-coded with an icon system for clear differentiation. A consistent grid structure was employed throughout the publication to ensure coherence and ease of navigation. The challenge was to balance creativity with structure, creating a visually engaging design that was also functional for an academic audience. Each section was distinct yet maintained a common thread, making it easy for readers to identify and engage with different topics.
Challenge
The main challenge was designing a flexible, cohesive system that could carry the magazine's educational and peace-building themes while still allowing each section to stand out. The goal was to create a design that would not only work for the current edition but also serve as a template for future issues.
Solutions
We developed a scalable design system that allowed each section to have its own unique visual identity while maintaining an overall thematic consistency. This included colour coding, custom icons, and a distinct layout grid for each section. The system was designed to adapt easily for future publications, providing a unified yet flexible solution.
outcomes
The result was a highly functional yet visually appealing magazine that met UNESCO MGIEP’s objectives. The design system was well-received, and its adaptability ensured that future editions could maintain the same high standards of design, making it easier for readers to engage with complex topics.
