Lygometry is a word with a lot of different notions
Lygometry is a word with a lot of different notions, “lygo” in Latin means shadow, and “metry” means measurement so lygometry means of measurement of shadows.
When innovation is concerned lygometry means the answer to an open question. It’s a bridge between what we know and what we don't know. Lygometry is a tool which can be used, to open up the creative aspect and explore new possibilities of learning. For any creative process of learning, we need to answer something unknown.
Lygometry is itself an open question "Do we really know fully what we pretend to know ?", for example, Do we know about water or we know about H2O? or Both are the same things ?Do we really know about electricity? There is a lot of open questions around us.
In one of the TEDx speech, Amir Toufani says "Picture, the circle, where inside the circle is what we know and outside the circle is what we don't know. Lygometry is the edge of the circle.
Our learning system is equal for everyone and dumps a lot of information on a lot of people. With this approach, information is in abundance and cheaply available. In this digital information age, a lot of information is dumped into us in the shape of blogs, articles and forums, so on and so forth. This information is easily available and many a times it’s not relevant or correct. With the information overload, we are limiting ourselves in asking open questions. Our brains are comfortable with a problem which have already been solved.
According to ALA, till 2025 we will have more than 60% irrelevant or wrong information available online. That will be a disaster for our learning system. We need to understand the effect of information overload.
Lygometry is used to balance the availability of information and with the relevancy of information. It helps us to create a physical and social environment that balances the information.
AIM of Lygomatry:
We’re always afraid to ask the questions, we are afraid of the unknown
Lygometry is asking the question of starting with “Why”. “Why” is the most beautiful word to solve most complex problems. Another TEDx speaker Simon Sinek, created a golden circle of Why.
The asking question, defines curiosity, why things are as they are ? Why we do what we do ? Why ? Curiosity is the first stage of creativity. With the help of lygometry we can push the curiosity towards knowing. Kids are more curious about new things, so the learning process is simple and connected.
Newton's Apple Story
However, innovation in this world arises from the unknown. Question: Why does the apple fall from the tree ? Why it doesn’t flow in the air, or go up ?
In this world, most of the inventions begin with the question “Why”, or as I said- the curiosity of knowing the unknown. The curiosity of knowing an unknown is creativity, creativity to explore something unique, something which is more innovative.
Ands so, I am very much infected with the concept of Lygometry.
My Ideation on Lygometry:
My ideation of lygometry is solving the big problem of learning- learn with curiosity and with a lot of open questions.
So I brainstorm with my close friends and team, who can themselves be full of curiosity. My idea to build groups from multiple disciples, multiple cultures and multiple experiences come together to build and generate learning. Answer out open questions. Dr. Mayank Gupta gives a very nice word for this “pollination” , where we spread knowledge with full of energy and curiosity.
It’s a process of learning about something unknown that fills one with curiosity.
Life is beautiful not because of the things we see or do. Life is beautiful because of the people we meet.
Simon Sinek
